You came to my school on Wednesday 28th February and you made me realise that with hard work and perseverance, there’s a lot you can accomplish in life. You also made me realise that any thing is possible if you put your full heart content into anything. I look forward to reading

Hi Harriet I g to the same school as Leah Hadley and you are so inspirational I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to make my writing have more depth and meaning to it please it would be much appreciated. Thank you

  9. harriet43 says:

Hi Alaina. So glad I inspired you. Some tips: know your characters inside-out before you start writing (I have a special character questionnaire for this purpose), plan your story before you start, and work on a really arresting opening. Hope this helps!

  10. harriet43 says:

Hi Maya, I am so pleased I made you feel that and wish you the very best of luck in all you choose to do!

  11. maya shower says:

Hi Harriet, thank you for taking the time to reply to my message, if it isn’t a hassle may you please give me a few ideas about how I can make my writing more intriguing to read and how to make the story more lively and not dull and boring. Kind Regards: maya x

  12. harriet43 says:

Hi Maya, I would recommend starting with a really great opening: present your reader with an unusual situation or an exciting action sequence (or both!) and make sure your reader is asking plenty of questions. Also, know your characters inside-out before you start writing. Hope this helps!

    Hi Harriet,
You came into my school today(Riverside Primary school).
I was the one who put her hand up to be a show off and then kept getting what you told me to do wrong. I just wanted to say thank you. You gave me loads of great tips and really inspired me to write. The words just flowed through my head and I couldn’t stop writing when you came in. This is a section of what I wrote when you came:

A plane, a crash, terror. 80 crushes: 26 bones, 54 people. The windows of the skyscraper came shattering down on my head, and then……..black.
    ***
What happened the day before I couldn’t remember. All I know is I’ve lost everything I once new. Everything given to me, everybody who cared for me, everyone I loved, gone.

Do you have any tips for me? Please let me know because I really want to make my writing the best it can be!

Thank you so much again for coming in and using your humor and tips to inspire so many young people to write!
    From Ella.

  19. harriet43 says:

Hi Ella, Thank you for your lovely message. You were great when you came up to the front of the class! I like your story opening very much: just keep going with it. You have a natural sense of rhythm. Imagine yourself inside the narrator’s head, and you can’t go far wrong. So glad I inspired you, and hope to come back to Riverside again one day. It is a truly lovely school. H x
