Today we read 2 pages of Chapter one of The Boy who fell down Exit 43 and then continued it. It gave me lots of ideas and you are very inspirational!

    Hi Harriet!
I love writing, and you came to my school today and really inspired me! Thank you for everything you said, because it’s the ideas that aren’t good with me, and you taught me that they can be anywhere, future, past and present! I really appreciate it, even though others weren’t bothered as much as I was!

  14. Sam P. says:

    Hi,

Throwback to when you came to Billingham when I was in year 7! Back then I was a terrible writer and knows as ‘Rachael’. but since then I’ve came out as trans! ☺️ So, the real reason I’m here is that I’m still bad a writing. I can’t open a story and I have brilliant ideas, I just can’t write them.

I’ve asked friends and they laugh because my writing skills are that bad :/.

    Thanks Harriet ☺️

    Sam P.

  15. harriet43 says:

    Hi Sam,
Billingham! Wow! That was AGES ago! I’m sure I remember that day as being INCREDIBLY hot. Congratulations on being so brave and honest about yourself – I think that’s great. I’m sure your writing is fine. Best tips for openings: present your reader with an extraordinary situation (not something boring and ordinary); write so the reader is asking masses of questions (read the beginning of David Almond’s SKELLIG to see how this can work beautifully); write an exciting action sequence; use a strong character voice. Hope this helps and do keep in touch. x
